The Ridge Meadows RCMP wants to help seniors avoid getting scammed in an increasingly digital world that constantly sees new and innovative ways to steal people’s money and information.

At the Jan. 18 information session, members of the RCMP’s Crime Prevention Unit will visit Pitt Meadows to teach participants how to recognize and avoid some of the top scams affecting seniors in Canada.

According to Statistics Canada, approximately 16 per cent of the country’s population between the ages of 65 and 74 were victims of fraud in 2019.

Scams have only gotten more complex since then, resulting in many creative ways for criminals to take advantage of seniors.

The free Street Smarts for Seniors event will include a Q&A session where participants can get valuable information to help them not fall victim to any scams.

The event will take place at the Pitt Meadows Seniors Activity Centre (19065 119B Ave.) on Thursday, Jan. 18, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling 604-457-4771.
