A Maple Ridge woman has been sentenced to a year of probation, a six-month driving ban, and fined for fatally hitting a senior.

There was a lengthy delay before Jena Toni Dae appeared in court, and a warrant had been issued for her arrest when she failed to show up for a court hearing last year. But she was sentenced on June 28 in Vancouver Provincial Court, for driving without due care and attention. She was also fined $1,400.

The 26-year-old was driving a Honda Civic in Burnaby in September of 2021 when she hit a 75-year-old man, Zulfikar Ramji, in a pedestrian crossing at Kincaid Street and Smith Avenue.

Police said at the time that Dae remained at the scene and was cooperative. The victim was taken to hospital with multiple fractures, and two days later he died from a heart attack.
