The City of Maple Ridge urges people to stay cool during the coming heat wave.

With a summertime heat wave coming, the City of Maple Ridge is offering residents suggestions to help stay cool.

There is nothing but sunshine in the forecast for the coming week, with temperatures rising to 28 C on Friday, July 5 in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, 31 C on Saturday and Sunday, and 32 C both Monday and Tuesday, according to Environment Canada.

Factoring in humidity, the heat will feel like the high 30s, as a warm and dry pattern settles into the South Coast Region.

Forecasters say there is greater risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and ask the public to check on vulnerable friends and family members to watch for heat-related illness. Heat exhaustion symptoms include dizziness, heavy perspiration and weakness. Heat stroke can bring on confusion and even a loss of consciousness. A sign of heat stroke is that the victim is no longer sweating.

To help people stay cool, the city offers access to air-conditioned facilities including the library, Greg Moore Youth Centre, Leisure Centre, Albion Community Centre and suggest local shopping malls.

The city's water parks and pools are obvious choices.

The city also advises the public to:

• Limit time outdoors from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and seek shade

• Stay hydrated by drinking water

• Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing that covers your skin, a hat and sunglasses

• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

During heat warning events, the city’s bylaw officers and Community Safety Officers work with unhoused residents through the Community Resource Hub and partner agencies to provide wellness checks, hand out water, and ensure support services are available.
