Maple Ridge hosts major summer softball tournament

Hundreds attended the Summer Series Tournament

Some top-notch softball was played down at the Albion Sports Complex last weekend as hundreds of female athletes from B.C. and Alberta gathered for the Summer Series Tournament.

Hosted by the Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association (RMMSA), this year's tournament was slightly pared down from previous years due to the Canada Cup being simultaneously hosted in Surrey.

So instead of its normal three divisions, the tournament included only U13A and U15A teams, with the youth putting on quite the show for the passionate Canada Day weekend crowd.

Although the Ridge Meadows teams played their hearts out and won their fair share of games, they were unable to secure medals in either of the divisions, with Richmond coming out on top in the U15A division and White Rock taking gold in the U13A group.

But the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows girls still had a great time and took plenty of positives away from the tournament, explained RMMSA communications manager Misa Van Der May.

"This has always been such a competitive tournament and great practice for teams leading up to provincials," said Van Der May. "We loved having all the teams here and can't wait till next year."

The medal winners for each age group include:

U15A – Richmond Islanders 2009 (1st), Fraser Valley Fusion (2nd), Fraser Valley Fusion 09 McDonald (3rd)

U13A – White Rock Renegades 2011 (1st), Fraser Valley Fusion 2011 (2nd), Delta Inferno 2011 (3rd)
