There is speculation Tyler O'Neill could be traded to the Seattle Mariners.

Maple Ridge Major League Baseball player Tyler O'Neill could be making a sort of homecoming, as a potential trade target of the Seattle Mariners.

O'Neill, who now plays for the Boston Red Sox, is coming off a terrific series against the Toronto Blue Jays, where he hit three home runs, and his new club swept the three-game set. O'Neill became just the fifth Canadian-born player with a multi-homer game (two) in Toronto during the series. He leads the BoSox with 15 homers, despite missing 24 games due to a concussion and other injuries.

The sweep made it a five-game streak for Boston, but they are still 10 games back in the American League East, and there is speculation they could trade O'Neill. Tom Caron of New England Sports Network said the team could be willing to part with their top slugger, who enters free agency after this season, and Caron named the Mariners as suitors.

O'Neill was a fan of the Mariners growing up, and Seattle is the club that originally drafted him in the third round of the 2013 draft, then brought him up through their farm system.

A trade would be the latest event in an eventful season for O'Neill. He signed a one-year $5.85 million contract with Boston, then who set a new MLB record for opening day home runs, with five straight.

He hit that momentous opening day bomb in Seattle.
