Shovels will break ground on the new RCMP detachment this fall, along with the new Harris Road Park washroom facility, after the City of Pitt Meadows announced on Wednesday that they had awarded the construction contract to Kenaidan Contracting Ltd.

The switch over to an autonomous RCMP detachment is something that has been in the works for Pitt Meadows for quite some time, with a new detachment building being a huge component of the transition plan.

And now that a contract has been finalized, the city is closer than ever before to having its own independent branch of the RCMP, said Mayor Nicole MacDonald.

“Pitt Meadows is one step closer to an autonomous RCMP detachment which will enhance service levels and police response times, as well as prioritize the unique needs of our community,” said MacDonald.

“The new RCMP detachment represents a significant investment in the safety and well-being in Pitt Meadows.”

The new facility will be located at 12486 Harris Rd., and will be 19,000 square feet when it is completed.

And right beside it, where the current Harris Road Park washroom building is located, there will be a brand new washroom facility and concession built as well.

Both projects will begin in the next few weeks, with the washroom building expected to be finished by early or mid-2024, while the police detachment won’t be completed until late 2025.

Building these new facilities will come without a property tax increase for the residents of Pitt Meadows, according to City of Pitt Meadows CAO Mark Roberts.

“The construction pricing received for the new RCMP detachment and Harris Road Park washroom falls within the previously established $23.5 million budget,” said Roberts.
