Summer tours will take place at the Maple Ridge Recycling Depot throughout July.

Locals will soon be able to get a behind-the-scenes look at how their recycling is received, processed, and sent on its way to be turned into completely new objects thanks to the work done at the Maple Ridge Recycling Depot.

Starting on July 3, the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society (RMRS) will kick off the return of its popular summer depot tours program, which takes people through the inner workings of the recycling depot and teaches them about everything that goes into making sure recyclable materials don't just get thrown into landfills.

Led by environmental educator Dan Mikolay, these tours are designed for people of all ages and tend to be in high demand, with last year's set of tours selling out.

Perle Suddaby, RMRS community education and special event assistant, said that by learning what goes on at the depot, it makes it easier for people to understand how they can best help the environment when disposing of recyclable trash in their homes.

“These tours help you realize that those who work here are hard-working individuals that are helping the environment," said Suddaby.

The tours last approximately 45 minutes long, free for all ages, and will provide people with a chance to ask their burning questions about recycling while also getting an up-close look at the heavy machinery used at the depot.

Maple Ridge Recycling Depot tours will take place:

Wednesday, July 3 (4 p.m.)

Tuesday, July 9 (4 p.m.)

Sunday, July 14 (3 p.m.)

Interested individuals can register for one of these tours at rmrecycling.org.
