Busy Canada Day weekend expected at Maple Ridge area parks

Camping is booked solid for both Golden Ears and Rolley Lake Provincial Parks

Expectations are that this coming long weekend will be busy for Golden Ears and Rolley Lake Provincial Parks.

The BC Parks website shows campgrounds in both parks to be fully booked for the entire weekend.

And those include 17 new walk-in campsites that have been added to Rolley Lake Provincial Park.

James Hall, manager of the two parks, noted the Victoria Day long weekend in may was "surprisingly busy" even though the weather was not the best.

"Our attendance in our day use areas was down due to wet conditions," he said, with Rolley Lake receiving an average of 600 vehicles per day over the May long weekend, and Golden Ears getting about 1,500 per day.

However, he said, there were no issues to report.

In Golden Ears, Hall added, the construction of a new culvert has been completed, opening up the access road to the northern areas of the park including North Beach campgrounds.

This work was the result of a December atmospheric river event which resulted in more than 25 millimetres of rainfall in a very short period of time.

The culvert failed and a large portion of the roadway was also damaged.

“Fortunately there [were] no campers or park users in the area at the time of the incident as the failure had occurred overnight,” said Hall at the time.

BC Parks has three advisories for Golden Ears Park. There is a reminder that free day passes are needed to access the Alouette Lake boat launch, the Alouette Lake South Beach day-use area, the Gold Creek trailhead, and the West Canyon trailhead.

There is also a reminder to protect bears in the park by securing all food and garbage when away from your camp and at night.

And to look for the Discover Parks Ambassadors who will be conducting summer outdoor learning experiences.
