Otter resident Gary Klassen captured this video of a bear strolling along a street in his neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon, June 30. There were multiple bear sightings over the Canada Day weekend.

Otter residents Gary and Darlene Klassen were surprised to see a black bear strolling down a street in their Langley neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon, shortly after noon, on June 30.

After Darlene spotted it from a window facing the street, Gary captured the visit on video.

"This has never happened before in the 25 years we have lived on 240th," Gary told the Langley Advance Times.

There were multiple bear sightings in the Otter/Aldergrove area of Langley over the Canada Day weekend, at least seven, six of them within a 24-hour period, according to social media posts.

According to online reports, a bear was also spotted in a back yard near 246 Street and 56th Avenue, and there were other sightings on 32nd Avenue between 240th and 232nd, on 250th near 55 Avenue, 252nd near 52nd, 240th near 54thas well as Brown Park at 24045 51 Ave.

A provincial Ministry of Environment statement said conservation officers "will monitor bear activity in the area and respond as necessary to ensure public safety."

Residents are asked to report aggressive bear behaviour to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277.

A provincial web page  says the most effective and natural way to prevent conflicts with wildlife in urban areas is to put garbage, birdseed, compost and pet food away, and to keep fruit from trees off the ground.

Communities where attractants are managed properly have less human-wildlife conflicts and fewer animals destroyed, the page said.
