A new pilot program coming to Maple Ridge combines music, games, and movies to try and strengthen neighbourhood bonds throughout the city.

This inaugural program, called Rock the Block, will start tonight at Robertson Park, with two future dates to follow.

Each of the three Rock the Block events will include a wide variety of live music, games, and other interactive entertainment that is suitable for people of all ages, explained Maple Ridge Mayor Dan Ruimy.

“We encourage residents in Hammond, Albion, and Haney to join in these fun events close to home, meet their neighbours, and connect with their community,” said Ruimy.

“Nurturing connected and vibrant neighbourhoods is a key priority for the city, and Rock the Block is just one of many opportunities available for Maple Ridge residents to get out and enjoy our beautiful city this summer.”

The bulk of the entertainment will take place from 6 to 9 p.m., with a Movies in the Park event to follow at sunset.

By moving Rock the Block to a different location for each date, the city is hoping that it encourages people who live close to each area to attend the night that it’s in their neighbourhood. To further gear each event toward locals who live within walking or cycling distance, there will be limited parking available at each location.

Rock the Block and Movies in the Park are both part of the city’s Hi Neighbour initiative, along with other local programs like the fire department’s Hot Summer Night events that take place each Wednesday throughout July and August.

The first Rock the Block event will start at 6 p.m. at Robertson Park on Friday, July 7. The next date will be at Hammond Pool on Friday, Aug. 4, followed by the final event at Maple Ridge Museum on Friday, Sept. 1.

In addition to Movies in the Park taking place immediately after each Rock the Block event, there will also be movies shown at Memorial Peace Park on July 29 and Aug. 19. Residents are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and movie snacks to make the evening even more enjoyable.
