Holly Arntzen will perform at the Picnic for Peace on Saturday.

Maple Ridge Friends for Peace is hosting a Picnic for Peace on Saturday, June 29, from noon to 2:30 at the CEED Centre and garden, (11739 223 St.)

Local singer and songwriter Holly Arntzen will be performing at noon.  Arntzen’s set will include original songs and a singalong of traditional peace movement classics.

At 1 p.m. in the CEED Centre, Cinema Politica will host a screening of Jack Emberly’s documentary on the Fairy Creek protests.   Emberly will introduce his film, and lead a discussion afterwards.

Admission is free, by donation, and all are invited.  Attendees are encouraged to bring their own picnic for lunch. Coffee, tea, and water will be supplied.

Emberly's documentary Fairy Creek As I See It was created with filmmaker Cris Clevette, and details the protest of old growth logging near Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island. At a time when people are protesting acts of war, Fairy Creek is relevant. It is considered one of the largest acts of civil disobedience in Canadian history. There were more than 1,000 protesters arrested. Emberly visited the controversial blockade three years ago, in July of 2021.
