Maple Ridge shows its Pride

Hundreds came out for the Pride in the Park event

Love and positivity were in the air on Saturday as hundreds of people visited Memorial Peace Park to take part in the annual Pride in the Park celebration.

This event included drag performances, book readings, food trucks, dancing, dozens of community booths, and much more.

David C. Jones emceed the event, while Maple Ridge drag performer Carrie Dawn, along with Scarlett Rose, and Justin Abit, put on various drag performances for a very colourful crowd.

Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Lisa Beare had a tent at the event and helped hand out the door prizes, saying that she was so grateful that such an event existed within the city.

"I think it's so fantastic that our city hosts an event to celebrate Pride here in Maple Ridge and that we have a community that comes out and does the work," said Beare.

"I had a really long talk with my daughter, who is eight now, about what Pride Day means and she distilled it down to a day where we celebrate people who can love who they want to love and be who they want to be and we promise to keep them safe."

Pitt Meadows will have its own Pride celebration on June 19 as the city hosts its annual concert featuring the cover band Queer as Funk.
