One person is dead after being hit by a train on Sunday night, Feb. 22, in Maple Ridge.
First responders raced to the incident at around 8:30 p.m. in the 22300-block of River Road, by Port Haney Station and the wharf.
Fire Chief Dave Samson with Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue said paramedics were first on scene.
However, one person was pronounced dead.
Ridge Meadows RCMP confirmed it was a female pedestrian who was struck and killed by a train.
One witness noted it was around 8:15 p.m. when they heard the westbound train’s whistle blow once and then the train’s emergency brakes could be heard screeching as the freight train came to an unscheduled stop.
CPKC Police Service has since taken over the investigation.
The railroad company has confirmed that a train made contact with a person on the tracks Sunday evening.
“This incident is under investigation. The involved train moved from the area later Sunday evening,” said CPKC spokesperson Terry Cunha.
