U.S. Customs and Border Protection Patrol agents and Marine Interdiction agents apprehended two Maple Ridge men and eight bundles containing 243 kilograms of marijuana last year after a high-speed marine chase in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

A Maple Ridge man was sentenced Monday to 30 months in prison for attempting to smuggle more than 200 kilograms of marijuana into the United States.

Colin Charles Crowe, 27 and Kyle Grayson were spotted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Patrol agents around 1:30 a.m. on May 31, coming ashore with large black bags, west of Port Angeles along State Route 112.

When the agents attempted to apprehend the pair, they jumped back into their vessel and headed north.

A customs and border patrol vessel intercepted the fleeing boat after a three-minute chase in the Strait of Juan De Fuca.

The two Canadians were handed over to border patrol agents waiting on shore.

Agents discovered eight bundles containing 245 kilograms of marijuana floating in the water nearby.

The men told authorities they were being paid $5,000 to smuggle the marijuana into the U.S.

Besides the prison term, Crowe also received three years of supervised release for conspiracy to import a controlled substance.

Gadsby, who is also a Maple Ridge resident, is scheduled to be sentenced April 25.
