Mission Public School District (MPSD) will receive $161,000 from the province to help pay for student necessities such as school supplies, fees, class trips and costs for extracurricular activities.

In a news release on Thursday (April 4), Abbotsford-Mission MLA Pam Alexis and Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Bob D’Eith said families who are struggling with expenses for school activities will get more support from their school districts.

“When kids look back on the best parts of school, they often think of music class, sports teams, and field trips,” Alexis said. “This funding will help ensure that all students have the same learning opportunities in our schools.”

Additional costs associated with joining a school sports team or music program will be covered under the funding.

The $161,000 comes from the Student and Family Affordability Fund. MPSD previously received $800,105 from the province for food programs during this school year.

“As someone who has found so much joy in creating music throughout my life, I know how much school music programs can mean to a student,” D’Eith said. “This program makes it possible for more students in our community to play instruments without worrying about the cost, in addition to supporting other extracurricular activities.”
